Halifax LK725 damaged in the air, landed at Elvington airfield.
On the night of 21st / 22nd January 1944 this 77 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb Magdeburg and took off from Elvington at 19.48hrs. The time the aircraft was over the target is not stated in the squadron records but the crew released their load from 17,500 feet. While over the target area at 23.05hrs this aircraft was struck by falling 4lb incendiary bombs released from a higher flying aircraft. One hit the aircraft on the ammunition bins and tracks causing a few rounds to explode. Another bomb struck the port side of the fuselage and caused a dent. Despite the damage the crew flew the aircraft safely back to base and it landed safely at Elvington at 03.07hrs.
