Halifax LK725 at Lindholme airfield.

During mid-June 1944 Rufforth airfield had repairs carried out to the flying area so their resident unit, 1663 Heavy Conversion Unit, undertook some of it's flying activities at other airfields. On the night of 19th / 20th June 1944 Halifax LK725 was one of the aircraft and crews despatched elsewhere and this aircraft used Lindholme airfield to carry out a dual circuits and landings exercise. The exercise appears to have begun just before midnight with a series of successful take-offs and landing being made. At 01.07hrs the aircraft was again taking off from Lindholme with the pupil pilot at the controls but as it picked up speed a swing developed, the instructor took over control and did not correct the swing before the undercarriage collapsed. The damage was initially deemed repairable but a further inspection saw it written off.
