Halifax LK694 at Dishforth airfield.

On the night of 24th / 25th July 1944 this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a cross country training exercise and took off from Dishforth at around 23.00hrs. At around 02.00hrs the aircraft's starboard outer engine was shut down owing to the failure of the constant speed unit on the propeller. The crew completed the exercise and returned to the circuit of Dishforth airfield. While making a three engine landing at 04.06hrs the aircraft landed heavy, swung off the runway and headed toward the A1 road. In attempting to avoid running through the airfield boundary the pilot swerved toward the North-South runway but the undercarriage collapsed. The aircraft came to rest badly damaged and was not repaired. Within days the pilot and his crew were posted to 431 Squadron.

Pilot - F/O Andrew Paul Huchala RCAF (J/25362).
