Hurricane LF582 at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.

On 13th March 1944 this aircraft was in the care of No.7 Ferry Pilot Pool of the ATA and was being flown on a delivery flight from Silloth to Newmarket where it was to have been taken on charge by 1688 (Bomber) Defence Training Flight. While the pilot was attempting a cross wind landing at 14.00hrs at Sherburn in Elmet airfield, possibly to refuel, it was blown off Sommerfeld track onto what must have been soft ground, the wheels dug in and it tipped on to its nose.

Pilot - 1st Officer Arthur John Hockley ATA (804).

Hurricane LF582 was built to contract 62305/39/Vc by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. at either the Brooklands or Langley factory. On 25th February 1944 it was flown to 22 MU at Silloth and was about to join its first flying unit on 13th March 1944. No.7 F.P.P. were tasked with flying it to Newmarket and it landed at Sherburn in Elmet, where it was damaged. Cat.Ac/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was probably repaired onsite at Sherburn. On paper the aircraft was recorded as being taken on charge by 1688 (Bomber) Defence Training Flight at Newmarket on the same date but probably didn't arrive that day. When it completed the flight to Newmarket is not known. On 30th October 1946 No.1688 Flight disbanded though it probably remained there as it is listed as being flown to 22 MU at Silloth on 26th November 1946. On 17th July 1947 it went to No.2 M.P.R.D. at Eaglescliffe (Metal & Produce Recovery Depot) where it was scrapped.
