Hurricane LD978 at Hutton Cranswick airfield.
The Hutton Cranswick station orb is very specific in stating that on 8th January 1944 seventeen Hurricanes from 438 Squadron began the long transit flight from Wittering to fly to Ayr. Owing to a head wind the flight was compelled to land at Hutton Cranswick to refuel and owing to the time they landed the aircraft and pilots remained at Hutton Cranswick overnight. One of the Hurricanes made a bad landing and sustained a damaged propeller. The following morning the sixteen servicable aircraft continued on their way to Ayr leaving behind the damaged aircraft. It was repaired shortly after and made the flight north.
The 438 Squadron orb gives slight differing information, stating that on 9th January 1944 the aircraft left Wittering for Ayr, landing at Hutton Cranswick to refuel. One aircraft was damaged on landing and remained with another unservicable one but the servicable aircraft continuing to Ayr on the same date. The damaged ones were repaired overnight and flew north the following day. The AM Form 1180 gives the date as being 9th January 1944.
