On the night of 31st May / 1st June 1944 this 428 Squadron aircraft was to undertake an operational flight but soon after taking off it was realised that the main starboard undercarriage leg would not retract properly. The crew flew the aircraft out over the North Sea and jettisoned their bomb load and then made a crash landing at Dalton airfield where upon the undercarriage leg collapsed and the aircraft skidded to a halt.
