Halifax JD373 at Carnaby airfield.

During the afternoon of 21st August 1944 this 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training exercise at Marston Moor airfield. On one of the take offs the trainee crew almost certainly began to raise the undercarriage too soon after the aircraft became airborne, with the wheels partly retracted the aircraft then sank slightly and the wheels brushed the concrete damaging the mechanism. While the aircraft remained airborne the undercarriage would not then raise properly or then lower properly. The crew were diverted to land on the emergency landing strip at Carnaby and there they landed at 18.26hrs. The undercarriage collapsed before the end of the landing run and the aircraft was badly damaged.
