Halifax JD274 near Hackforth.
During the afternoon of 3rd August 1944 this 1666 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was being flown on an air to air firing combined with a practice bombing exercise. Which bombing range the crew were were using is not confirmed but there was one in the area of Snape and although some miles to the south, using that range could still fit. While on the flight the starboard outer engine failed so the crew feathered the propeller and shut down the engine. A short time later the starboard inner engine began to fluctuate in power. As height could not be maintained on just the port engines the crew attempted to unfeather the starboard outer engine without success. With both the propellers on the starboard engines windmilling this caused additional drag. At 17.45hrs a forced landing had to be made on farmland near Street House, between the A1 and Hackforth. The aircraft was badly damaged but all on board appear to have escaped injury. The pilot and his crew were later posted to 425 Squadron.
Pilot - P/O Joseph Wilfred Rene Sicotte RCAF (J/87150).
Crew - Names unconfirmed.
