Halifax JD202 at Wistow Lordship.

During the morning of 17th July 1944 this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was to have been flown on a training flight that involved flying with one engine deliberately shut down and so the trainee crew could practice making approaches to land with just three engines running. With the exercise underway by mid-morning those on board may have already made some earlier practice landings. At around 10.40hrs the aircraft had just become airborne again from Riccall airfield when the instructor shut down the starboard outer engine to simulate an engine failure. Shortly after this engine was deliberately shut down the propeller on the starboard inner engine broke up and fragments hit and damaged the starboard outer engine. Unable to restart the starboard outer engine or maintain height on the port engines the instructor made a forced landing at Wistow Lordship at 10.45hrs and while the aircraft was badly damaged all eight on board escaped injury.
