Halifax JD120 at Full Sutton airfield.

During the late afternoon of 6th September 1944 this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a cross country training flight and during the flight the port inner engine failed. A short time later the starboard outer engine then failed and the pilot was unable to maintain height. While making an approach to land at Full Sutton airfield the undercarriage failed to lower using the regular levers. The crew did not fully operate the manual hand pumps to lower the undercarriage so a belly landing was made at Full Sutton airfield at 19.30hrs. The aircraft was not repaired.

Pilot - P/O Walter Donald Friend RAAF (421196).
