Halifax HX331 at Lissett airfield.

On the night of 28th / 29th January 1944 this 158 Squadron aircraft was to have been flown on an operational flight to bomb Berlin. On take off from Lissett airfield at 00.35hrs the air speed indicator failed. The pilot abandoned the take off run but could not stop the aircraft on the runway and overshot off the airfield, it came to rest near the airfield sewage works and was badly damaged. The undercarriage legs must have both collapsed at the very least.

Pilot - Sgt Gerald Henry James Leonard RAFVR (1039899).
