Halifax HX292 damaged in the air, landed at Skipton on Swale airfield.

On the night of 25th / 26th February 1944 this 433 Squadron aircraft was to have been used to fly an operational flight to bomb Augsburg and took off from Skipton on Swale airfield at 21.05hrs. Outbound at 23.30hrs and while flying at 22,000 feet the crew noticed the starboard inner engine was using around three times the fuel as would have normally been expected. This fuel consumption would not have allowed them to continue to the target and have enough fuel to return home so they jettisoned the bomb load and turned around. While flying in the landing circuit of Skipton on Swale airfield the crew unfeathered the starboard inner engine but it exploded and caught fire. The engine nacelle and the wing caught fire, a landing was made at Skipton on Swale at 01.43hrs and the fire was put out.
