Halifax HX288 at Skipton on Swale airfield.

During the afternoon of 23rd April 1944 this 433 Squadron aircraft was flown on a training exercise that involved the crew practicing using radar to locate a bombing target. Possibly just prior to taking off or while flight the aircraft suffered the main starboard tyre burst but this went unknown to the crew at the time. Debris on the runway at Skipton on Swale airfield may have damaged the tyre. On landing at Skipton on Swale airfield at 16.10hrs the aircraft swung off the runway and ran into soft ground causing the wheels to stop. The aircraft then tipped up onto it's nose which must have broken the aircraft's nose as the damage sustained saw it written off.
