Halifax HR917 at Lindholme airfield.
On 3rd October 1944 this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a cross country training flight and took off from Lindholme airfield at around 11.30hrs. With the flight all but complete the crew returned to the landing circuit of Lindholme airfield. While flying at 700 feet the starboard inner failed and the crew were unable to feather then propeller. The engine then caught fire. The port inner engine then failed and although the crew attempted to reach Lindholme airfield height could not be maintained. Realising that the aircraft would not make the runway at 14.53hrs the pilot attempted to land in a field just off the runway to the north of the airfield but the starboard wing hit the ground first causing the aircraft to cartwheel. While all on board appear to have escaped injury the aircraft was badly damaged by fire.
Pilot - Sgt C A Paton RCAF (R/129700).
