Halifax HR873 at Rufforth airfield.
During the morning of 18th September 1944 this 1663 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was due to have been flown on a cross country training flight. On take off from Rufforth at 10.31hrs the aircraft began to swing off the runway but the pilot managed to get the aircraft off the ground but the wheels struck a barn on the airfield boundary. A short time later the aircraft crashed and while the aircraft was badly damaged all on board escaped injury. The pilot and his crew were later posted to 158 Squadron but all were killed in the crash of Halifax PN437 at Sledmere in March 1945.
