Halifax HR858 at Carnaby airfield.

During the morning of 21st August 1944 this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training exercise at Riccall airfield. During one of the take offs at Riccall at around 09.30 the trainee crew attempted to raise the undercarriage too soon after the aircraft had just left the ground, unfortunately the aircraft sank in a gust of wind and the starboard wheel touched the concrete when it was partly retracted. This caused damage the mechanism to the starboard undercarriage. Fearing a dangerous swing on landing the crew were diverted to the wide emergency landing strip at Carnaby where they landed at 10.47hrs. The instructor appears to have done his best in keeping the starboard wing high on landing and minimal damage appears to have resulted. The instructor had survived the serious crash to Halifax JD151 at Wressle in August 1943.
