Halifax HR794 at West End, near Lindholme airfield.

At 21.05hrs on 20th November 1944 this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft took off from Lindholme airfield with the crew tasked with flying a cross country training exercise. While the aircraft became airborne it then failed to climb because the bomb doors had been accidentally opened. The aircraft continued at a low height for some 1500 yards after the end of the runway before crashing in the West End area. Upon crashing the aircraft caught fire and was destroyed. All members of the crew sustained injuries. There was no bomb aimer on board the aircraft as he was signed off duty as being sick. The crash location would now be somewhere in the region of where the M18 motorway was later built.
