Martinet HN960 at Hutton Cranswick airfield.
On 24th January 1944 this 291 Squadron aircraft was flown on a target towing flight lasting 75 minutes. On making a heavy landing at Hutton Cranswick airfield at 11.30hrs the undercarriaged collapsed. Both the accident card and the squadron records mention that ground haze effected visibility around the area of the airfield on this date. The date and details come from the A.M.Form 1180. The 291 Squadron records seem at odds with this stating that the "ground haze all day stopped all flying from the aerodrome, and indeed from the Sector". Reading between the lines, perhaps this is indicating that flights were attempted prior to the ground haze being deemed too bad and the accident to Martinet HM960 occurred when it was recalled to base because of the conditions.
