Mosquito HK533 at Leeming airfield.
Additional details surrounding this incident have yet to be learnt because the National Archives have not included the March 1944 section of the 604 Squadron ORB on their downloadable file series. What is currently known is that on 23rd March 1944 the crew of this 604 Squadron aircraft were undertaking a flight at night when the port engine failed. The aircraft and crew were based at Scorton but it would appear that the failed engine prevented them from returning there. The crew made an emergency landing at Leeming airfield at around 18.00hrs but over-shot runway, ran through a hedge, causing undercarriage to collapse and damage to airframe. The fuselage was broken and after assessment the aircraft was deemed beyond repair. The pilot received a gash to the head that required stitches.
