Mosquito HK115 near Church Fenton airfield.

On 2nd December 1944 the crew of this 307 Squadron aircraft took off at night from Church Fenton airfield to air test this aircraft following a major overhaul. On their approach to land the aircraft was seen to climb vertically, stall, and then fall, hitting the ground and a barn over outside of the airfield boundary at Church Fenton. Both airmen in the aircraft were killed.

Pilot - S/Ldr Stanislaw Aleksander Kohut PAF (P/0965). Aged 30, buried Newark Cemetery, Nottinghamshire.

Navigator - WO Mieczyslaw Zakrocki PAF (P/780215). Aged 30, buried Newark Cemetery, Nottinghamshire.


Stanislaw Aleksander Kohut was born on 5th May 1914.


Mieczyslaw Zakrocki was born on 7th November 1914. He may have been serving with 307 Squadron as far back as April 1941. Mosquito HK115 was built by De Havilland at Leavesden and was supplied as new to Marshalls Flying School on 27th January 1943. The aircraft then passed to 218 MU on 27th February 1943 and was taken on charge by 83 Squadron on 16th April 1943. The aircraft was transferred to 307 Squadron on 10th February 1944. It was written off following the crash on 2nd December 1944 that saw Cat.E/FA damage be the damage assessment. The aircraft was struck off charge on 14th December 1944.
