Martinet EM420 at Catfoss airfield.
At 11.30hrs on 28th May 1944 this Central Gunnery School aircraft was in the the process of taking off from Catfoss airfield for a target towing flight, after leaving the ground to become airborne the engine then failed with the aircraft just six feet off the ground. The pilot had no option but to try and land the aircraft, he attempted to raise the undercarriage to stop the aircraft but this appears to have had no effect and the aircraft ran off the runway into a barbed wire fence. The aircraft was later repaired.
Pilot - Sgt Frederick Daniel Unwin RAFVR (1545676)
