Lancaster ED567 at Riccall airfield.

On 17th May 1944 the crew of this No.1 Lancaster Finishing School aircraft were undertaking a night training flight when the port outer engine failed while they were over the York area. The crew diverted to land at Riccall airfield but on landing at 02.46hrs the aircraft swung off the runway and the undercarriage collapsed.

Pilot - P/O Frank Collett RAFVR (174772).

Six crew - Names unknown.

Frank Collett was later posted to 625 Squadron on 20th May 1944 from No.11 Base (Lindholme). On the night of 28th / 29th July 1944 he and his crew were flying Lancaster LM546 on an operational flight when the aircraft was badly damaged by an enemy fighter. All baled out and became PoWs. His crew were probably the same earlier in May 1944 when Lancaster ED567 was damaged at Riccall. An excellent account of their final flight and service is on the "Aircrewremembered.com" website.
