Halifax DT689 at Wombleton airfield.
Prior to this date the concrete runways and tracks at Wombleton airfield were breaking up with heavy aircraft and vehicles so the decision was made to move the flying training activities of 1666 H.C.U. and 1679 C.F. to East Moor on 21st January 1944 while the damage at Wombleton was made good. Two days later on 23rd January 1944 the 1666 H.C.U. record book gives details that a Halifax was flown over from East Moor to check on the progress, on landing safely on a serviceable part of the runway the pilot taxied across the runway when a gust of wind caught the tail of the aircraft and caused the tail to swing off the concrete and into mud. As the aircraft was still moving at the time the tailwheel unit broke off and also twisted the rear fuselage. The record book states that the aircraft was "Halifax JD689" (but this aircraft serial number did not exist) and the aircraft received Cat.Ac damage. 1666 HCU did have Halifax DT689 having confirmed this by obtaining the Form AM1180 this is correct.
