Halifax DT548 at Wombleton (or Dalton?) airfield.

On 14th September 1944 this 1666 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft suffered damage, presumably at Wombleton, although Dalton is also suggested as the location. The exact events or who was on board are not yet known. Damage was initially assessed as being only minor but it does not appear to have been repaired. It was converted to a Ground Instructional Airframe at Dalton at the end of 1944 which could suggest that was where the damaged happened and it never left there afterwards.

Crew - Names unknown.

Halifax DT548 was built to contract B982938/39 by English Electric Co.Ltd. at Samlesbury and was delivered to 102 Squadron at Pocklington in October 1942. It was transferred to 419 Squadron at Middleton St.George in November 1942, then later it was transferred to 1659 HCU at Topcliffe on 25th September 1943. It finally ended it's days at 1666 HCU at Wombleton, arriving on 24th May 1944. It suffered Cat.A(c)/FA in this incident on 4th September 1944 but no details are yet known regarding the events. It was not repaired and it was later Re.Cat.E, struck off charge on 2nd December 1944 and then converted to Instructional Airframe 4863M for use at Dalton in December 1944.
