Halifax DT519 at Marston Moor airfield.
At 09.50hrs on 21st April 1944 this 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was in the process of taking off from Marston Moor airfield for what would have been the pupil pilot's initial training flight on the Halifax type when it swung off the runway. Once on the wet grass the brakes had little effect and the aircraft eventually struck a maintainance platform that was left nearby. The instructor returned to operational flying within a short time and was killed within weeks with 78 Squadron.
Pilot (pupil) - F/O James Thomas Brophy RAAF (418734).
