Lancaster DS841 at Carnaby airfield.
On the night of 24th / 25th June 1944 this 408 Squadron aircraft was due to have flown an operational flight to Biennais to bomb a construction works. Unfortunately it burst a tyre on take off from Linton on Ouse airfield at 23.48hrs which damaged the starboard flap. The pilot was ordered to fly out to sea and jettisoned the bomb load at 02.10hrs. He then flew to the emergency landing strip at Carnaby to land. At 04.40hrs a landing was carried out but the undercarriage collapsed, it spun around four times before coming to a halt. The aircraft is listed as being Lancaster DS741 in the squadron records but this must be incorrect as that was lost on Ops some weeks previously with 426 Squadron. It was almost certainly DS841 which also appears to have been a 426 Squadron aircraft but loaned to 408 Squadron.
