Lancaster DS727 damaged on Ops, landed at Linton on Ouse airfield.

During the evening of 14th January 1944 the crew of this 408 Squadron aircraft took off from Linton on Ouse airfield at 16.52hrs to undertake an operational flight to bomb Brunswick. The crew released their bomb load from 19,000 feet at 17.18hrs over target markers. At 19.18hrs while over the target area the aircraft was struck from above by incendiary bombs released by a higher flying aircraft. A fire started in the area of the main plane but was extinguished. Flak bursts also damaged the Lancaster in the wings, port inner engine, port bomb door and port flap. Despite the damage the aircraft was flown back across the North Sea and landed safely at 22.22hrs. Minor Cat.Ac damage resulted.

On 27th January 1944 the first seven named above were killed flying Lancaster DS849 on Ops to Berlin. All are buried in Hanover War Cemetery.
