Lancaster DS651 at Linton on Ouse airfield?
During the morning of 15th August 1944 the crew of this 408 Squadron aircraft undertook an operational flight to bomb the Melsbroek airfield at Brussels. They took off from Linton on Ouse airfield at 09.55hrs. On their first run over the target area they had to take evasive action because of flak. They then released their bombs over a runway on the eastern edge of an airfield from 16,000 feet at 12.02hrs. They landed at Linton on Ouse airfield at 14.14hrs. No damage is mentioned in the squadron records. This was the final operational order 408 Squadron used Lancasters for during Summer 1944, they flew purely Halifaxes after this and the squadron records do not list any training being carried out in them after this date. This specific Lancaster was then struck off charge on 30th August 1944 and it has been suggested that the damage occurred on 15th August 1944. It may have received some over-stressing resulting from taking extreme evasive action which was picked up upon on a later inspection but without any more information I cannot be certain though this seems the most logical explanation.
