Lancaster DS614 at Linton on Ouse airfield.

On 25th June 1944 this 408 Squadron aircraft was flown on a night cross country and bombing training flight. On the approach to land the pilot could not get the flaps to work. At 03.00hrs the pilot attempted a flapless landing at Linton on Ouse but aircraft was travelling too fast to stop on the available runway, realising he was about to overshoot the pilot attempted to turn the aircraft but speed was still too great and the port undercarriage collapsed beyond the end of the runway.

The AM Form 1180 gives the aircraft identity as being DS614. An entry in a Flying Control log gives it as DS651 but the AM Form 78 gives a repair on site being made to DS614 on 27th June 1944 which certainly fits as being this aircraft damaged two days previously.

Pilot - F/O Donald MacRae Kennedy RCAF (J/19578).

This pilot had early flown within Coastal Command's UK training system. He slightly damaged Beaufort N1179 at Turnberry on 21st April 1943 while training with 306 F.T.U. (Ferry Training Unit) prior to ferrying an aircraft from the UK to Poona, India. He was posted back to the UK in December 1943. He was awarded the DFC for service with 408 Squadron, Gazetted on 27th March 1945.
