Halifax DK246 at Dishforth airfield.
Over the night of 6th / 7th May 1944 this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a night cross country training flight. While preparing to land at Dishforth following a seven hour flight the crew attempted to lower the undercarriage but the port leg failed to lower. They then attempted to lower it manually but it would not drop down correctly. They raised the starboard leg and made a belly landing at Dishforth at 05.15hrs on the grass at the side of the runway in use. The fault was later inspected and a steel pin in the undercarrige locking system has sheared off. The pilot and his crew were later posted to 419 Squadron.
Pilot - F/O Allan C C Rokeby RCAF (J/27651).
