Halifax DJ988 at Dishforth airfield.

During the afternoon of 31st January 1944 this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings exercise using Dishforth airfield. At 14.20hrs during one of the landings a cross-wind was present the aircraft began to enter a swing, the pilot attempted to correct the swing and remain in control but the undercarriage became stressed and collapsed. Both undercarriage legs must have given way as all four engines received damage and the aircraft was later deemed beyond repair so was written off.
