Halifax DG411 at Rufforth airfield.

During the afternoon of 5th August 1944 this 1663 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training exercise at Rufforth airfield. While making a landing at 14.54hrs the aircraft began to swing off the runway in a light cross-wind. The pilot was unable to control the swing and as it was heading towards a dispersal point with a parked aircraft he deliberately violently swung the aircraft to avoid a collision. While a collision was averted unfortunately the undercarriage of DG411 collapsed.
