Halifax DG385 at Dishforth airfield.
During the evening of 19th February 1944 this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a cross country training flight and during which an engine had to be shut down. The crew managed to fly the aircraft back to the circuit of Dishforth airfield and make an approach to land on three engines. Just prior to touching down the aircraft swung off the runway line so that it then landed on the grass. The aircraft then bounced hard on touching down, the port outer engine broke off and the rear turret broke off with the rear gunner in it. The aircraft came to rest with the undercarriage broken and a fire broke then out. The airfield's fire rescue crew were instrumental in preventing what could have been a far serious incident, as it was three members of the crew sustained injuries. The rear gunner sustained the most serious injuries and was taken to Harrogate Hospital. The pilot was posted to 192 Squadron in early March 1944.
