Halifax DG360 at Rufforth airfield.
During the early hours of 10th August 1944 this 1663 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training exercise at Rufforth airfield. On one of the take off runs, at 04.10hrs, the aircraft swung off the runway and headed towards another aircraft. The pilot braked but this caused the aircraft to spin around and the undercarriage collapsed. This was 1663 Heavy Conversion Unit's third mishap of a long night. The pilot and his crew were posted to 346 Squadron after completing their training.
