Halifax DG348 at Dishforth airfield.
During the early hours of 20th July 1944 this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was used to fly a circuits and landings training exercise at Dishforth airfield. After one circuit being flown the aircraft made an approach to land at Dishforth. The aircraft touched down at 01.51hrs but the aircraft began to swing off the runway. The pilot noticed another aircraft on the ground and stationary ahead. While the initial swing of his aircraft could have been corrected had the aircraft then been brought into line again a collision was likely. This initial swing developed into a ground-loop resulting in the undercarriage collapsing. The damage was not repaired and the aircraft was written off.
Pilot - F/O Harry William Elder RCAF (J/35888).
