Halifax BB390 at Topcliffe airfield.
During the evening of 16th March 1944 this 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a cross country training exercise. During the fligh the starboard outer engine failed. Following a four and a half hour flight the aircraft landed at Topcliffe at 23.00hrs but the port tyre burst, the aircraft swung off the runway and onto the grass. When it ran onto soft ground the port undercarriage leg collapsed causing minor damage to the aircraft and the port engines.
