Halifax BB264 at Lindholme airfield.

During the afternoon of 25th April 1944 this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a trainng flight. During the course of the flight the crew belieced there was a fault with the air speed indicator. At 15.15hrs following a four hour flight the aircraft landed at Lindholme airfield but unfortunately the initial touchdown was heavy and the aircraft bounced. On touching down again the tail wheel and both main undercarriage legs were torn off and the aircraft came to rest badly damaged. Three members of the crew sustained injuries. The pilot later stated that as he believed the air speed indicator to be be fault he did not want to attempt to overshoot and make a second approach to land. After an examination no fault was found with the air speed indicator.

Pilot - P/O James MacDonald RAF (54631). Injured.

William Chorley lists the rest of the crew in his Bomber Command losses book but I have not yet located a source for this crew list so am not directly copying him.
