Hudson AE588 at Lindholme airfield.
On 3rd February 1944 this 24 Squadron Hudson was slightly damaged on landing at Lindholme airfield at 12.45hrs when it ran off the runway in a crosswind. the incident is mentioned briefly in a Ferry Command occurrence book I have found in the National Archives.
Crew - Names unknown.
24 Squadron used nearby Doncaster airfield for some of their operations, I would guess that the weather prevented them from reaching there so the crew landed at Lindholme. Looking in their records it appears that Hudson AE588 was used frequently on their transport duties earlier in the war but by the end of 1943 and then early 1944 it wasn't used at all by them on their recorded flights. It may have taken a role as some form of training aircraft though purely speculation on my part.
Hudson AE588 had a long service history. It was built by Lockheed in the USA and shipped to the UK. It was received by 20 MU on 11th October 1941 then issued to the O.A.D.U. on 24th December 1941. Later it was issued to 24 Squadron on 22nd November 1942. It sustained Cat.Ac/FA damage as a result of the incident at Lindholme on 3rd February 1944 which saw a repair on site being made. It existed until being struck off charge on 19th February 1945.
