This incident has been very well documented on both the printed format and also on the internet so repeating everything already generally out there seems somewhat pointless as I have very little else to add. Paul Allonby's ”Courage Above the Clouds" being probably the best format to date.
On 22nd February 1944 this 364th Bombardment Squadron USAAF B-17 Flying Fortress was undertaking an operational flight to bomb Alborg, Denmark when it was attacked and damaged by enemy aircraft. The attack killed three of the crew but the remaining members managed to fly back towards England but became lost in poor visibility. The aircraft ended up over Sheffield and suffered engine failure, it crashed into trees in Endcliffe Park Sheffield with the loss of all on board. The pilot was later awarded a posthumous Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions in avoiding crashing into a populated area. The 75th anniversary of the accident saw thousands of people witness an impressive USAF and RAF flypast.
