Unidentified Halifax at East Moor airfield.
Prior to this date the concrete runways and tracks at Wombleton airfield were breaking up with heavy aircraft and vehicles so the decision was made to move the flying training activities of 1666 Heavy Conversion Unit and 1679 Conversion Flight to East Moor on 21st January 1944 while the damage at Wombleton was made good. At around midnight on 21st / 22nd January 1944 there appears to have been an incident at East Moor airfield while 432 Squadron were mid-way through flying an operational flight to Berlin. A 1666 HCU Halifax blocked the runway at East Moor and prevented the returning 432 Squadron Lancasters from landing. It must a been a fairly serious incident as all 432 Squadron aircraft were diverted on return.
