Unidentified Halifax landed at Wombleton airfield.

On 20th July 1944 this 1666 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was being flown on a training exercise which involved the crew deliberately shutting down the two starboard engines to practice flying on only two engines. The exercise was carried out at 5,000 feet. Unfortunately when it came to unfeathering the two propellers nothing happened. The aircraft began to loose height rapidly and the instructor fly back towards Wombleton. As a precaution the pilot ordered all of the crew to bale out apart from the trainee flight engineer and all landed safely. The pilot was then able to land downwind but normally at Wombleton airfield. The only mention of this incident which identifies the aircraft I have located was found in a No.6 Group Flying Control log and this purely lists it as "-D". The time an ROC post reported the incident aas 16.02hrs. If correct then "-D" was new to 1666 Heavy Conversion Unit because Halifax JD212 had carried this code but was damaged three days earlier and not repaired.

Pilot (instructor) - F/Lt John Albert Edwin Lancaster DFC RAFVR (142541).

Pupil Flight Engineer - Name unknown. Remained on board.
