P-51 Mustang 44-13823 at Catfoss airfield.

Before creating this webpage I should add that I have not yet bought the USAAF accident report on this incident. Purchasing it would give the full story. On 26th November 1944 the pilot of this aircraft crashed at Catfoss airfield. The end. Purely a guess on my part but we know that the pilot of Mustang 43-6768, that crashed at Hedon a few weeks earlier, was undertaking training with the 555th Fighter Training Squadron, based at Goxhill, Lincolnshire while serving with the 1st Scouting Force, USAAF. The pilot of Mustang 44-13923 was also serving with a Scouting Force, USAAF at the time of this incident at Catfoss so I make the assumption both men were doing similar training at Goxhill.

Pilot - Walter Conrad Klank Jnr USAAF.

Walter Klank was born on 27th November 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, USA but was raised in Oshkosh, Wisconsin by his mother. His obituary states that he worked with aviation pioneer Steve Whitman. He enlisted for service and trained as a pilot before heading overseas after D-Day. He would initially join the 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, USAAF based at wormingford, Essex. In October 1944 he transferred to the 3rd Scouting Force. While I cannot yet prove it I suspect he was training at 555th Fighter Training Squadron at Goxhill at the time of this incident at Catfoss purely because Goxhill was the nearest airfield being used by the USAAF to Catfoss. On 24th December 1944 he was flying his twenty fifth mission when his Mustang was shot down by enemy aircraft. After baling out he receiving head and arm injuries. He died in July 2008 in Dayton, Ohio, USA.
