Martinet MS550 damaged at Cowton, landed at Croft airfield.

During the morning of 12th February 1944 the crew of this 1691 (Bombing) Gunnery Flight aircraft were flying in the Northallerton area when the aircraft struck a pylon with the starboard wing which removed part of the wing leading edge. The crew were able to remain in the air and made for nearby Croft airfield, unfortunately the engine then failed while they were making their approach to land but the aircraft managed to land at Croft safely. The incident is not listed in the unit orb which only mentions poor weather effected their flights on this date. The incident is mentioned and also the aircraft identified in the No.6 Group flying control log. Three days later this unit disbanded and most of the aircraft and personnel transferred to 1695 Flight.
