Unidentified Halifax damaged in the air, landed at Clifton airfield.

The Clifton airfield Flying Control occurance log (AIR16/928) stated that during the morning of 11th March 1944 a Halifax was flying in the York area when the port outer engine cowling came off in the air. As it then fell away it struck the port tail fin which opened up a hole in the leading edge. At 11.45hrs the pilot made forced landing at Clifton airfield but the brakes failed. The aircraft ran off the end of the runway and became bogged down though appears to have received no further damage. The aircraft was later towed out and it was parked on the concrete. The logbook stated that Blyton was informed and asked to send an aircraft to pick up the crew in afternoon.

1662 Heavy Conversion Unit was based at Blyton at the time and the aircraft may have been one of their aircraft, or formerly one of their aircraft.

Pilot - Sgt Beetham.
