Whitley Z9430 on Beverley golf course.

On 18th October 1943 this 1484 Flight aircraft took off from Leconfield airfield at 13.59hrs so the crew could undertake an air gunnery training exercise, probably on the air gunnery ranges off the Hornsea part of the Yorkshire coast. Soon after taking off the port engine failed and loosing height the pilot made a forced landing on the golf course at Beverley. The Mayor of Beverley would later congratulate the pilot for his skill in avoiding hitting houses in Beverley. Also on this date Whitley Z9292 made a forced landing in the Hornsea area while undertaking the same gunner training flight with the same 1484 Flight. These would be its two last serious flying mishaps.

Pilot - F/Sgt Eric William Haines RAF (657847).
