Master W8506 near Hepworth.

On 21st March 1943 the pilot of this 16 (P)F.T.S. aircraft was undertaking a training flight when he became lost in bad weather. Running out of fuel he attempted a forced landing north west of Penistone but over ran the selected field and crashed near the Victoria Inn, between Hepworth and Penistone.

Master W8506 was built to contract B.65589/40 by Philips and Powys Ltd. at South Marston and was delivered to 1 F.T.S. at Netheravon on 27th June 1941. The aircraft sustained unspecified Cat.B damage later in the year and was dismantled for a repair in works at Fairfield Aviation Ltd, at Elstree on 5th November 1942. On 18th February 1942 it was returned to 1 F.T.S. at Netheravon. On 1st March 1942 it was transferred to 16 (P)S.F.T.S. at Newton and sustained Cat.B/FA damage on 21st March 1943 near Hepworth. The aircraft was dismantled and transported for another repair in works on 1st April 1943 but as work began it was Re-Cat.E on 17th April 1943 and struck off charge.
