Lancaster W4884 at Lindholme airfield.

At 00.50hrs on 13th April 1943 this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft swung on take off from Lindholme airfield, the pilot over corrected the swing and it swung the opposite direction eventually leading to the undercarriage collapsing.

Lancaster W4884 was built to contract B.69275/40 by Metropolitan Vickers Ltd. at Trafford Park and was delivered to A.V. Roe and Co. Ltd. at Woodford for assembly on 28th January 1943. The aircraft was taken on charge by 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit at Lindholme on 4th February 1943. As a result of the mishap at Lindholme on 13th April 1943 Cat.B/FA damage was the damage assessment which required a repair in a works factory. On 21st April 1943 it was dismantled and transported to 24 M.U. at Ternhill for the repair in works. On 22nd October 1943 it was awaiting collection. On 6th November 1943 it was flown to 20 MU at Aston Down and was taken on charge by 5 LFS at Syerston on 24th November 1943. On 26th February 1944 it was transferred to 61 Squadron at Coningsby but on 27th March 1944 it was flown to 5 MU at Kemble. On 20th April 1944 it was flown to A.V. Roe and Co. Ltd. at Woodford for a repair in works to be carried out and exactly a month later on 20th May 1944 it was awaiting collection. On 27th May 1944 it was flown to 46 MU at Lossiemouth where it remained until 18th January 1947 when it was struck off charge following a Cat.E assessment.
