On 3rd August 1943 this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft crashed on landing at Lindholme airfield in the early hours of the morning following a training flight, the landing was made without using the flaps but the trainee pilot landed on the shorter runway, overshot into a field and broke the undercarriage.
Pilot - Sgt John Donald Range Cromarty RAFVR (1041590).
John Cromarty completed his training and was posted to 156 Squadron PFF. On 2nd / 3rd January 1944 he was the pilot of Lancaster JB640 on Ops to Berlin and crashed in the target area. The crew have no known grave and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. The wreckage of the aircraft was not found until 1976. He had received a commission, to the rank of P/O on probation on 21st November 1943.
