Lancaster W4200 at Lindholme airfield.
During the late morning of 28th July 1943 the pilot of this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was undertaking only his second basic solo circuits and landings exercise. The aircraft initially took off at 11.40hrs and carried out a series of short flights but half an hour after the start of the exercise and during one take off run, at 12.10hrs, the aircraft entered a swing and ran over a flare on the airfield. A tyre was punctured and the undercarriage then collapsed. No injuries were reported but the aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
