Magister T9827 near Adlingfleet.

On 16th February 1943 the pilot of this 317 Squadron aircraft became ill whilst in the air so was attempting to make a forced landing near Adlingfleet but the aircraft hit a tree on the bank of the River Trent and was badly damaged. What the illness the pilot was suffering is not known but it is believed he survived the flying accident.

Magister T9827 was built to contract 778435/38 by Philips & Powis Ltd. at Woodley and was first test flown on 9th August 1940. Three days later it was flown to 48 M.U. at Hawarden and on 7th September 1940 it was taken on charge by 85 Squadron at Church Fenton. It then moved with the unit over the next weeks and months as they were moved around the country. On 23rd October 1940 it went with the unit to Kirton in Lindsey, on 23rd November 1940 to Gravesend, on 1st January 1941 to Debden and on 3rd May 1941 with the unit to Hunsdon. On 11th July 1941 it was transferred to 308 Squadron at Northolt who moved to Woodvale on 12th December 1941. On 18th February 1942 the published history of this aircraft states it sustained minor Cat.A(c) damage when it was forced landed after the engine cut out in the air. The location for this is not yet known. On the same date it was taken to Marshall's Flying School Ltd. at Cambridge for a repair in works. On completion of this repair it was returned to 308 Squadron at Woodvale on 27th March 1942. On 16th April 1942 it was transferred to 315 Squadron at Woodvale. On 5th September 1942 it was transferred to 317 Squadron at Woodvale and then moved with this unit to Kirton in Lindsey on 13th February 1943. Three days later on 16th February 1943 it crashed near Adlingfleet and after assessment Cat.E/FA damage was recorded following an inspection of the wrecked aircraft.
